SSW hosts an annual Awards Ceremony to honor individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to social justice, one of the core values of the Social Work code of ethics. This event provides an opportunity for the community to come together in recognition and celebration. The following awards are given each year:

Awards & Recognition
Criteria: This award recognizes and celebrates a faculty member—whether an adjunct or clinical instructor—whose teaching, scholarship, or research meaningfully advances justice. Inspired by the impactful work of Dr. Camara Jones, this individual embodies a practical approach to their contributions, ensuring their work is accessible and relevant to both academic and non-academic communities.
Criteria: This award recognizes and honors a staff member or clinical instructor who advocates for both individual and systemic change. Through their efforts, this person works to dismantle barriers and enhance access and opportunities for individuals and groups within and outside the SSW community. Like Judith Heumann, they consistently raise awareness about social justice or disability justice addressing both visible and invisible issues affecting marginalized individuals.
Criteria: This award recognizes and honors a student who demonstrates courage in challenging inequities, particularly those affecting their peers, and works collaboratively to address them. Like Audre Lorde, this student channels their talents and efforts toward confronting injustice through innovative and impactful approaches.
Criteria: This award honors an alum who is making an outstanding professional contribution to the field of social work, particularly in advancing social change and creating a more just community, Their work reflects the social work values outlined in our code of ethics by exemplifying a commitment to social justice, advocating for systemic change and the well-being of marginalized communities.
Criteria: This award recognizes and honors an SSW group—comprising students, faculty, staff, alumni organizations, units, or committees—that has demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing systemic change and fostering a more just environment within and beyond the SSW community. This group exemplifies leadership, collaboration, and advocacy.
Criteria: This award acknowledges and honors a person or organization external to the School of Social Work who has made significant strides in building a sense of unity and purpose within the Baltimore community.

- Our J.E.D.I. Champions are members of our school and the larger community who are passionate and committed to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
Criteria: This award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing justice and fostering an inclusive environment within the School of Social Work, often working behind the scenes. Their selflessness and humility embody the core principles of fairness and advocacy. While they may operate quietly, their impact resonates profoundly, helping to shape a more just and supportive community within SSW and the surrounding areas.
