First-Generation Student Success Program (FGSP)

Welcome First-Generation MSW Students!

First-generation students are often defined as those whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year degree. First-Gen graduate students are former first-generation undergraduates who have progressed to a master’s program. However you define your first-generation status, we’re thrilled that you’re here!

We believe that you already possess all the strengths and assets that you need to be successful, we're just here to help you refine your skills and find a sense of connection with your peers and the school. We also believe in the value and importance of what you bring with you from your families and communities.

The First-Generation Student Success Program (FGSP) was started in 2021 to create a community among first-gen folks and is run by the Office of Student Affairs.

Some FGSP initiatives are:

  1. Social Events
  2. Community Building Circles
  3. Office Hours with the First Gen Lead Scholar, Nathan Newmuis
  4. Advising sessions with our Academic Advisor
  5. Writing workshops
  6. APA tutorial
  7. Celebrations and Acknowledgements
